ADT 64- Sample Program

Task:  Can regulate water temperature.

Prerequisites:  ADT 1, ADT 3 and ADT 17

Concept:  This skill is actually an extension of “can use a faucet” (see prerequisite ADT 17). The mechanical ability of using the faucet is assumed but the regulation of temperature is not. While this activity leads the student towards greater independence it clearly has an element of danger based on the potential for scalding. Supervision of the student should be maintained, even when independence in this skill is perceived, if any concern for possible errors exists. One precaution can be to lower the water heater setting during training periods. Different faucets function in different manners. It is suggested that the faucet used for training be like the one(s) that are found in the home of the student.

Behavioral Objective: : The student will, upon verbal request, regulate water temperature to a level of “warm” and a level of “cool” to a 100% accuracy level for 20 trials.

Materials: A faucet common to the student’s environment and some bowls larger than the student’s hand.

Task Analysis:

1.) Prepare for the student a bowl of warm water and a bowl of cool water. Assist the student in discriminating and identifying which bowl is which.

2.) Continue step 1, reducing the assistance provided until the student can independently discriminate between the warm and cool water.

3.) Physically guide the student through the process of using the faucet and regulating the water temperature between warm and cool.

4.) Continue step 3, reducing the physical prompting to a level of gestural and step by step verbal prompting.

5.) Continue step 4, reducing gestural and verbal prompting to step by step verbal prompting.

6.) Reduce all prompting until supervised independence is achieved.
