SEN 35-
Sample Program
Task:
Can use a seatbelt.
Prerequisites:
ADT 1, COG 6, SEN 2, SEN 3 and S&L 8
Concept:
The use of a seatbelt has become common practice in most circumstances. Student
knowledge and ability on performing this task independently can be useful
from a variety of perspectives. This sample lesson seeks to capitalize on
motor imitation skills (see prerequisite COG 6) to perform the task of putting
the belt on and taking it off when appropriate. Another issue in seat belt
use is for the student to keep it on during travel and to accept the mild
restraining aspect to its use. Because this is a direct safety issue the criteria
is set at 100%.
Behavioral Objective:
When entering a vehicle equipped with seatbelts the student will correctly
connect the belt for his/her seat before the vehicle begins travel, keep the
belt fastened during travel and remove it when travel has concluded to a 100%
accuracy rate for 20 trials.
Materials:
A vehicle common to the student's environment that has seat belts.
Task Analysis:
1.) Demonstrate to the student the process of putting on and taking off the seat belt.
2.) Physically guiding the student, assist, but do not force, the student through the process using the terms "on" and "off" as appropriate.
3.) Modify step 2 to that of motor imitation in a gestural manner still using the word cues.
4.) Perform an actual short ride encompassing all of the skills from step 3 and adding positive reinforcement for every minute the student continues to wear the belt without objection or efforts to remove.
5.) Continue step 4, gradually increasing the time frame to once every five minutes or until the trip is completed.
6.) Continue step 5, providing positive reinforcement only upon successful completion of the trip. Continue until the objective is met.
