SEN 34-
Sample Program
Task:
Can use scissors.
Prerequisites:
ADT 3, COG 6, SEN 2 and SEN 13
Concept:
The use of scissors can have applicability in many domains such as cognitive skill lessons or can be applied to some vocational efforts. Fine motor skill use is the primary skill outcome. Be sure to first assess which hand is the student's dominant one and obtain scissors for that hand before beginning. Although not a part of the lesson, basic scissors safety should be taught before beginning this lesson.
Behavioral Objective:
When requested to "Please cut this out.", using at least 5 specific shapes drawn on paper, the student will use scissors, cutting on the drawn line, to accomplish that task to an 80% accuracy rate for 20 trials.
Materials:
Paper, broad tip markers, medium tip pens and scissors.(Note: Blunt end scissors are a good choice for beginning efforts.)
Task Analysis:
1.) The instructor should assess which hand is the dominant one for the student. Watching which hand is chosen by the student, when presented an object, can be an indicator.
2.) Using the dominant hand physically guide the student to grip and then hold the scissors.
3.) The instructor should mark a piece of paper in a basic rectangular shape using the broad tip marker and physically guide the student to cut out the shape.
4.) Continue step 3, changing the broad tip marker design with a medium point pen.
5.) Reduce guidance to step by step verbal prompting and offer different basic shapes to cut out.
6.) Continue step 5, reducing prompting down to the total task request of "Please cut this out." for at least 5 shapes.
