S&L 10- Sample Program
Task:
Identifying items in the home.
Prerequisites:
ADT 4, ADT 5, ADT 6 and S&L 7
Concept:
This exercise seeks to promote both receptive language (understanding) and expressive language (verbalizing) about things that are common to the student's environment. The choice of "items in the home" is only because these are terms that the student will interact with on a regular basis. Although not a part of the outcome of the behavioral objective, attaching labels to the items with the printed word or name of that item can assist in later efforts toward reading. While the program can be modified to a "classroom" type of setting, the design of this sample lesson is to encounter these objects in the locations where they normally are kept.
Behavioral Objective:
When asked to point to and verbally express the names of at least 10 items, common to the student's living environment, the student will point to and verbally state the name of that item to a 90% accuracy for 20 trials.
Materials:
Items in the student's environment that are used on a regular basis. Also index cards and markers may be useful.
Task Analysis:
1.) The teacher should go with the student through his/her living environment pointing out and verbally identifying specific items that are used on a regular basis. The student should then be prompted to imitate the words presented. Key areas might be the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen locations.
2.)
While optional to meeting the objective, the teacher can print the names of the items on index cards and attach the cards to those items. If this is done, attach the cards to the items and repeat the process outlined in step 1.
3.)
Continue the concept outlined in step 1, and prompt the student to "point to" the objects as the teacher names them. Continue to prompt the student to imitate the name of the item when the teacher has spoken it.
4.)
Continue step 3, reducing imitation response until the student can respond first to "point to" and then to "tell me its name" requests for at least 10 items.
