SOC 9- Sample Program

Task:  Pass objects to others.

Prerequisites:  ADT 3, COG 6 and SEN 12

Concept: A very important concept, that can be difficult to acquire, is that of sharing items with others. This lesson seeks to teach a beginning point for that skill. While sharing, per se, is not being directly taught, the ability to give items to others is certainly a starting point. To achieve the result of this lesson, some physical guidance can be used, but the degree of physical direction should be minimized so that the student is not being "forced" to give an item to another student.

Behavioral Objective: When the student is requested to "pass" a specific item to another student, the student will do so within at least a 30 second time frame to a 90% accuracy for 20 trials.

Materials:  Objects of interest to the student that can be held in his/her hands and music (preferably a softer style).

Task Analysis:

1.)  In a small group setting (at least 3 students), provide each student with an object or toy to interact with and play soft music at the same time.

2.)  Continue step 1, and at a random time stop the music and request that each student "pass" their object to the student next to them. Provide gentle physical guidance but do not force the exchange. If successful provide each student with strong positive verbal reinforcement. If not initially successful make no negative comments but try this step again at a later time.

3.)  Reduce the physical prompting aspect until only step by step verbal prompting is needed.

4.)  Reduce the step by step prompting and gradually replace with a total task request of "Please pass the (item held) to (the name of the student sitting next to the student receiving the training).".
