SOC 21-
Sample Program
Task: Playing a simple card game.
Prerequisites:
ADT 1, ADT 3, ADT 5, ADT 6, SEN 12 and SEN 13
Concept:
While numerous prerequisites are listed for this activity, successful enjoyment of the group process has been observed for students who do not possess all of the prerequisite skills. The card game described here is very simple and more complex games may be more appropriate depending on the student's abilities and skill. Group interaction is the main desired outcome. The name of this sample game is "Three cards, most reds". The reason for that should become obvious.
Behavioral Objective:
When requested to participate and in agreement to do so, the student will actively participate in a card game to an 80% level of attending behavior and a 50% accuracy level related to the game's rules for 20 trials.
Materials: A deck of playing cards and colored or marked papers that are black and red. (Note: Not all 52 playing cards are needed. Even a deck that is short a few cards can be used.)
Task Analysis:
- Introduce to the student the concept of red and black using colored or marked paper of those colors. Continue until the student can point to or otherwise discriminate between these two colors.
- Deal to the student (or preferably a number of students) three cards face up. Going from student to student identify how many red cards the student has been dealt. Attempt to get the student to acknowledge that number.
- Modify step 2, by dealing the cards face down and guiding the student, where necessary, to holding the cards in front of him/her.
- If the group process has not already been introduced begin that process and identify for the students which student "has the most red cards". Of course, more than one student could have the same amount. Be sure to acknowledge all who have "the most reds".
- Continue step 4, prompting the students to tell, or otherwise indicate to the instructor, how many red cards each student has and which student has the most. Continue play until all students have "won". Repeat this step until the objective is met.
